What's in a name?

It began as a quirky joke, a funny name. Inside the walls of a lip balm manufacturing facility, a machine operator adopted “big mother pucker” as the nickname for the pre-fill mechanism, a device that dropped lip balm tubes into small pucks prior to filling. The name made people snicker, and “pucker” soon became everyday terminology within the facility. It got us thinking, and our thoughts quickly evolved into a lip balm product known as Pucker Protector®.

As we saw Pucker Protector gain a following in the marketplace, we decided to develop a line of natural products under the Protector Brands name. Protector Brands is a line of natural body care products designed to protect customers from the earth’s everyday elements. Our first all natural product was Bug Protector, a DEET-free, non-toxic bug repellent.

Of course, creating the perfect formula for Bug Protector was no walk in the park. In the testing phase, we made sure to experiment with the product during all activities we felt people would use it: golf, fishing, deep-wooded camping, backyard barbeques, bonfires, bike rides, evening walks. You name it, we tried it — even on our pets! We went through countless changes because we were committed to delivering the very best.

Over time, we discovered just the right combination of ingredients. A blend of lemongrass, geranium, peppermint and cinnamon oils helps infuse a pleasing scent to humans but a foul one to our pesky counterparts. What makes our product exceptional when it comes to performance is our differentiator: vanillin. Unfamiliar to most, the vanillin compound, when used in place of the vanilla fragrance, improves the effectiveness and protection time of plant-based topical repellents.

With such a positive internal response to the field tests, we knew it was too good to keep to ourselves. We had full confidence that Bug Protector would deliver outstanding performance and felt it would further strengthen the brand. Once you try it, we’re convinced you won’t want to use anything else.

Bug Protector is a Certified B Corporation®, as we’ve been recognized by the nonprofit organization B Lab for meeting the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and social and environmental performance.
